The U. S. Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday it will soon approve a new prescription drug for a popular erectile dysfunction (ED) drug, Viagra.
The agency will also take notice of the approval of an earlier, cheaper version of the drug that's already sold at the same cost and with the same risks.

"It's great news for consumers who have a problem with their health," said FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, Jr., in a statement. "But if it's not a drug with a lower risk of causing ED, we're going to have to approve it."
The FDA said Viagra's side effects include heartburn, nausea, and headache, which are "not normal" symptoms, because the drug is not a heartburn medication.
The agency also said the company had not been told about the new drug's risks or known side effects.
Viagra's patent on the drug expired in April 2012. That means generics are now available in the U.
In its statement, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said the agency "strongly regrets" the delay.
Gutlieb said the agency is working with manufacturers to ensure Viagra remains effective in treating ED, and will update the agency on the new drug in the future.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning shoppers not to use the blue-green “Viagra” drug as it could increase its price.
“Viagra” is the generic name for the generic version of sildenafil, a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction.
The FDA has warned that Viagra could cause an increased risk of heart attack, stroke and liver failure.
The agency said the drug is “not approved for use in the United States and should not be used as a substitute for exercise-based diet and exercise alone.”
In a letter posted on its website, the FDA said the warning was based on “some epidemiological studies that show a higher risk of cardiovascular events in men who take the drug.”
The drug has not been linked to a specific type of death linked to it.
